An interesting statistic on today’s morning news:
328 people have been murdered in the Chicago area this year.
247 U.S. Troops have been killed in Iraq this year.

The thing is, the south-side of Chicago suffers a lot of gang violence and honestly, I’m perfectly happy to let them kill each other. If you took out all those news reports you hear about the South-side, the picture would be very, very different.

This is what you get for having this type of open availability to guns.

For the first time in nearly 70 years, the U.S. Supreme Court is trying to decide whether this text from the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is true, or – like I believe – just words of a different age:

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

I feel the need to point out that I am from the UK, where gun laws are very different – yet strangely I feel we’re more free there (being free also from the fear of being shot at by a gun-wielding maniac).

We have the same people in the UK with the same problems. We have kids who leave notes saying they wanted to ‘go out in style’ – but without a gun they do not manage to take as many – or usually any – others with them.

We have an illegal gun problem, yes, but this pales into almost insignificance in comparison to the seemingly ‘open to all’ laws in the United States. In the UK, you can walk almost anywhere – anywhere – without fear of a gun. Our maniacs carry knives usually and while this may appear bad – they at least have to get within a range of a few feet to kill somebody. The best defense is distance and that is one that a gun provides you with.

I sincerely hope that the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington will modify the law in that state, because when they do this will eventually filter out to other states and the U.S. will finally advance from the words laid down a couple of hundred years ago, by men of a different age. You cannot live by guidelines set down so long ago and expect people’s lives to remain civilized.

I should add, perhaps, that I am not against people owning guns in the way that you might think. But nobody – nobody – needs to own a handgun or an automatic weapon (basically any weapon that is purely designed in this day and age for person to person shooting). In my opinion, if you want a gun, you buy one – you then register at a local gun club and they hold your gun, the bullets and the paper targets (the only thing you should be shooting at).

There are exceptions, of course. I have no issues with the Police being armed (though in the UK, they are not) and I have no problems with Farmers (for example, who have a large amount of land or animals they might need to defend from other animals) from having something similar to a Shotgun – which is all they’d need.

April 16th, 2007 I posted this:

It is written in the U.S. constitution that all have rights to bear arms, so why can’t this be changed? Sure, the founding fathers had some great ideas, but they lived in a different time. Isn’t it time for change? Isn’t it possible to adapt as times change? Whether you are leading a nation or a religion, you cannot live by rules and guidelines set 200 years ago just as much as you can’t by rules or guidelines set 2000 years ago. Times change!

If people have a hobby with guns, that is fine, but why can’t the gun clubs hold the guns with the paper targets, rather than letting people take their guns home? Why are people allowed handguns? Why are people allowed assault rifles? Surely the only reason for that type of gun (outside a gun club where you’re shooting paper targets) is to shoot people? The only people I can understand having guns are perhaps farmers, rangers or other workers who have to control (at times) dangerous animals.

Today, over twenty people were killed at a college in Virginia. Is it time for a change? Is it time to make finding a gun more difficult? A person who goes crazy with a knife could cause plenty of damage, but they could be overpowered… It is very hard to overpower a bullet.

I’d just like to say something very similar today:

It is written in the U.S. constitution that all have rights to bear arms, so why can’t this be changed? Sure, the founding fathers had some great ideas, but they lived in a different time. Isn’t it time for change? Isn’t it possible to adapt as times change? Whether you are leading a nation or a religion, you cannot live by rules and guidelines set 200 years ago just as much as you can’t by rules or guidelines set 2000 years ago. Times change!

The only people I can understand having guns are perhaps farmers, rangers or other workers who have to control (at times) dangerous animals.

Today, a gunman opened fire at a college where my friends Rick and Becky work and learn. This comes a matter of days after five women were gunned down in a local mall over a matter of $200. Is it time for a change? Is it time to make finding a gun more difficult? A person who goes crazy with a knife could cause plenty of damage, but they could be overpowered… It is very hard to overpower a bullet.

No, they bloody well do not.

After the Virginia Tech. shootings recently, video games were blamed, of course.

The guy who killed those teachers and students at Virginia Tech had mental problems. If he or anyone with mental problems goes out and kills people of course they could have been effected by video games! But, if they were not effected by video games, they would have been by movies, music or even “real life” and the reason for that effect is – they’re not normal people. Normal people are not effected by video games.

If someone is a nutcase, they may end up killing people – yes – but the reason won’t be video games, it won’t be movies, it won’t even be what the gunman decides to blame… The reason will be that the person is a nutcase! It’s real easy to find something or someone to blame, we can all do that, but how about blaming the person who actually did it for a change?

Are Americans made aware of “friendly fire” incidents?

In 1991, American forces in A-10′s opened fire on British APC’s, killing eight soldiers in a so-called “friendly fire” incident from US forces. During the entire operation to liberate Kuwait, only a further eight were killed by the enemy, equalling the number killed by our friends.

2003, a local translater was killed and a BBC journalist injured in a “friendly fire” incident from US forces. This happening while the journalists were being escorted by US Special Forces.

2003, a patriot missile shot down a British Fighter Jet, in Iraq, killing the pilot and navigator.

2003, another British soldier killed while under fire from American A-10′s.

2005, two Italian journalists killed, one Bulgarian solder killed by American “friendly fire”.

2006, NATO convoy attacked by two A-10′s in Afghanistan, killing one Canadian soldier and injuring five others.

The reason I listed those, is to make people aware just how often “friendly fire” incidents actually happen among the US military. Hearing on the news this morning that the death of Terry Lloyd may have also been a “friendly fire” incident really was the final straw… It seems for a nation that is so liberal on gun law, even writing it into the constitution, the USA have no idea how to point at the right people.
