Isn’t it a little bit scary that stories of her not performing well have been surfacing on a regular basis from the town (where she was mayor) and state of Alaska, saying how bad she was at those jobs, yet people elsewhere really do seem prepared to potentially make this woman the president of the United States, should something happen to McCain.
Honestly, it’s scary. I recently saw an amateur movie (made with Palin’s approval – before she was announced as VP) which showed Palin has an Israeli flag in her house, when asked she said she “likes Israel”. Ya – good one… I’m sure that will really help with the security of the United States. Israel is not full of angels and unfortunately the U.S. media are so pathetic that most of the population have no idea just how badly the United States is thought of, even in parts of the world they consider friends.
I really think that if the U.S. population are stupid enough to vote a particular way (the same way) this time, they are going to find a world population giving them very little respect. For me, it’s a mark of poor media, bad education and general ignorance. I hope things don’t turn out badly or the rest of the world will be thinking of the U.S. in an even worse light than that!

“I really think that if the U.S. population are stupid enough to vote a particular way (the same way) this time, they are going to find a world population giving them very little respect”
- O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.
The “lack of respect” is already happening – my country is little different. From within it’s very hard to get a sense of perspective, but looking from outside it’s difficult to imagine how people can fail to see the problems. The reason is that Country A is managing the news of how the population thinks about Country A – they don’t much care about what we think of Country B. So we end up with a better understanding of other countries than of our own. Except “Country I” – that news seems to get managed pretty much everywhere.
It is strange to see people from the US live in other countries – especially France. I’ve seen this several times,as they arrive with one set of ideas, and you can watch those change over time. Interesting.
You know it’s hard to blame the American people for their occasional lack of knowledge on world events when you see how hard it is to even see them on the news in this country.
I’ve found out while here that I (British born and educated) know almost as much about U.S. History and politics as any American I have met. Unfortunately I have also found that I know a hundred times more about the rest of the world as many I have met and that’s really sad.
I understand it is a big country and the news and media have a lot of national stories to tell, but it’s shocking how little coverage the world outside the USA gets…
If the McCain Palin ticket wins in November I think there would be a worldwide rush to donate organs and any spare body parts to an organ bank ensuring as best as possible McCain completes his term.
Palin at first sight brings to the ticket the assets McCain lacks: big C conservative, youth, female but like the assets of many financial institutions it’s not hard to see they look good on paper but in reality the substance is just not there and worse – she is desperately right wing, talking about Iraq being God’s will and such.
For me it shows the weakness of Obama’s campaign to date to explain his “change” agenda also and his electoral handicap which makes it still very ambitious, an idea of a ‘black; president. I’m also not sure that Biden is the best choice of VP – well in office he might be but electorally maybe Clinton would have been a stronger choice!
The USA however is worryingly unaware of how it’s standing in the world has been desperately undermined by Iraq and Guantanamo, fuel dependence, indebtedness and poor financial regulation, vulnerability to climate change effects, the impending failure in Afghanistan and the instability likely to emerge in Pakistan and the progress of international terrorism generally. The USA and Europe now struggle to win UN votes as China, Russia and India assert both economic and military confidence. It all adds up to the whiff of an ‘end of empire’!
This is not the time for a right wing White House that thinks it’s still 1980!
